Elon Musk has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, claiming that the organization has strayed from its original goal of developing Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) for the betterment of humanity. Carlos E. Perez believes that this legal action could transform the current leader in Generative AI into a situation similar to that of WeWork.

The focus of this legal dispute is on OpenAI’s shift towards a for-profit model. However, the pursuit of profit seems to prioritize corporate interests over ethical concerns such as AI training and data management for end-users.

Elon Musk’s brainchild, Grok, a competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, has the ability to gather real-time information from tweets. Meanwhile, OpenAI has a reputation for scraping copyrighted data indiscriminately. Recently, Google secured a $60 million deal to access data from Reddit users for the training of Gemini and Cloud AI.

Merely advocating for open-source practices is insufficient to protect users’ interests in this environment. Users need mechanisms to ensure informed consent and fair compensation for their contributions to training Large Language Models (LLMs). Platforms that facilitate crowdsourcing of AI training data are crucial in addressing these concerns.

The vast majority of internet users globally rely on centralized social media platforms, generating an immense amount of user-generated data. However, users often lack control and ownership over this data, as the current consent mechanisms are inadequate and often deceptive.

In the era of data-driven technologies, data is often likened to oil in its value. Big Tech companies have little incentive to grant users more control over their data, as it would increase the costs of training AI models significantly. However, the emergence of blockchain technology offers a new paradigm where users can have control over their data and benefit from its use.

The transition from Web2 to Web3 entails a shift towards a community-driven model where users can own and manage their data securely. Blockchain and cryptographic tools enable users to validate and share data without the need for centralized intermediaries. This decentralized approach not only reduces costs but also allows for fair compensation to users for their data contributions.

By embracing these new models, the industry can move towards a more ethical and sustainable approach to AI training. Empowering users and ensuring equitable distribution of benefits will ultimately benefit both large corporations and individual users alike.
