Zuckerberg Unveils Cutting-Edge Metaverse Avatars with Photorealistic Features
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently conducted his first interview in the metaverse using high-quality Codec Avatars. This signifies the rapid evolution of Meta’s virtual reality (VR) technology. In the interview with computer scientist and podcaster Lex Fridman, Zuckerberg showcased the photorealistic capabilities of Codec Avatars, a research project that Meta has been working on since 2019.
During the interview, both Fridman and Zuckerberg utilized Meta Quest Pro VR headsets to communicate with each other within a virtual space. They appeared as photorealistic 3D avatars of themselves. Codec Avatars rely on neural networks and utilize over 170 cameras to generate a detailed 3D model.
However, it is important to note that users still need to undergo a digitization process known as photogrammetry. This process involves capturing and interpreting photographic images to gather information about physical objects. It remains uncertain when Meta plans to make these advanced technologies widely available for mass adoption.
The interview took place shortly after Meta unveiled its third generation of the Meta Quest headset. This new version, positioned as the “world’s first mass-market” device, offers a 30% improvement in visual resolution and a 40% increase in audio range compared to the Quest 2. The Meta Quest 3 is powered by the new Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform and features two displays with a resolution of 2064×2208 per eye, combined with the Infinite Display optical stack.
Meta’s continuous advancements in VR technology and the introduction of high-quality Codec Avatars and the Meta Quest 3 headset showcase their commitment to pushing the boundaries of virtual reality experiences.
