The upcoming changes to Ethereum were recently discussed by Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, at a conference in London. Buterin described these changes as the “purge, the splurge, and the scourge.” The conference, called ETHGlobal’s Pragma, featured speakers like Buterin, Justin Drake, Sergey Nazarov, and Stani Kulechov, and focused on the future of Ethereum after the Dencun upgrade.
Buterin explained that the transition in Ethereum will shift from focusing on layer-1s (L1s) and core developer-centric advancements to improving usability and layer-2 (L2) solutions. These L2 solutions, such as zkSync, Arbitrum, and Optimism, utilize roll-ups to enhance scalability and efficiency without compromising security. Buterin emphasized the need for more scalable, secure, and user-friendly applications on Ethereum.
However, Buterin also acknowledged that there is still work to be done. He referred to this as the “purge,” emphasizing the importance of a lean and agile blockchain protocol. He also mentioned the “splurge,” which involves improvements to the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and advanced cryptography. Lastly, Buterin discussed the “scourge,” which focuses on mitigating economic centralization risks.
One notable competitor to Ethereum is Solana, which has outperformed Ethereum in terms of DEX volume in the past four months. Ethereum upgrades are seen as an attempt to catch up to Solana’s performance. However, researchers like Justin Drake believe that Ethereum’s potential lies in sharding and shared infrastructure components, which can enhance the network’s performance and user experience.
At the conference, there was a common theme of prioritizing user-friendly and accessible applications for Ethereum. Speakers emphasized the need for upgrades that improve user experience and integration. The post-Dencun update for Ethereum aims to meet the needs of its growing community and compete with other blockchain platforms like Solana.
As Ethereum continues on its roadmap, it faces numerous challenges, including competition from Solana. However, the focus remains on creating a decentralized platform that evolves to meet the needs of its users and the broader digital ecosystem.
