Unstoppable Domains launches blockchain domains to fuel the growth of web3
Unstoppable Domains and Blockchain.com have recently announced a strategic partnership to introduce and popularize a DNS-enabled web3 domain using the “.blockchain” extension.
As per information shared with crypto.news, the two companies have united to officially register the .blockchain web3 domain with ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), the global governing body for IP addresses and domain names.
ICANN is preparing to introduce new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) by 2026, with the application process commencing next year upon the release of ICANN’s Applicant’s Guidebook. This timeframe provides the firms with a year to make necessary preparations for the upcoming domain application.
A representative stated to crypto.news, “The collaboration between Blockchain.com and Unstoppable Domains is geared towards readiness for the forthcoming ICANN application.”
Upon receiving approval from ICANN, the .blockchain domain will join the ranks of existing top-level domains (TLD) such as .com and .net, offering a dedicated space for businesses related to blockchain technology.
“After ICANN’s accreditation, the .blockchain gTLD will operate as both a web2 and web3 domain […] It will combine web3 and traditional web2 browsing capabilities, improve accessibility, and enable users to seamlessly utilize “.blockchain” domains across both ecosystems. This will include functionalities like email, website resolution, and more,” the spokesperson elaborated.
Established in 2018, Unstoppable Domains has been utilizing blockchain technology to empower users with control over their digital identities. The company intends to provide customized domain names for individuals, brands, and businesses, broadening the adoption of blockchain-based domains.
The partnership between Unstoppable Domains and Blockchain.com seeks to close the gap between web2 and web3, similar to the recent integration of browser-compatible “.box” web domains by the Ethereum Name Service.
Web3 domains, such as .sol or .crypto, function as smart contracts on public blockchains like Ethereum, Polygon, and Solana. These extensions can simplify cryptocurrency transactions by replacing lengthy wallet addresses and also support website hosting and single sign-on methods for various web3 applications.
The allure of web3 domain names lies in their simplicity, allowing users to send funds to a memorable wallet address like “jack.eth” instead of a complex string of characters. “.blockchain” and other web3 domains are unique, non-fungible tokens (NFT) hosted on an immutable blockchain, ensuring users full ownership of their data and serving as their digital identity.
In a recent development, FIDA, the token governing Solana-based infrastructure developer Bonfida, experienced a significant surge following the launch of its Solana Name Service (SNS) in China. Users are currently acquiring popular domain names through these platforms in anticipation of corporations registering their respective brands.
