TON blockchain to receive 50% of ad revenue in partnership with Telegram
Starting in March, Telegram will begin rewarding channel owners by giving them an equal share of ad revenue. The payments will be made in Toncoin, the cryptocurrency used on the platform. Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram, explained that this move is aimed at encouraging community building and promoting the sharing of in-app content among broadcast channel creators. According to Durov, broadcast channels generate an impressive one trillion views per month, but only 10% of this traffic is monetized. Durov’s own channel, which has 1.6 million subscribers, confirms this statistic.
Durov also emphasized that the TON blockchain will be the exclusive payment rail for ad revenue sharing. In November, the TON blockchain was confirmed by Certik as the fastest and most scalable blockchain, with a public live-streamed test showing it can handle over 104,000 transactions per second. This blockchain is expected to facilitate fast and secure payments in Toncoin for creators. As a result of this announcement, Toncoin experienced a significant increase of over 20%, according to CoinMarketCap data from February 28th.
It is worth noting that Telegram is not the first social network to implement an ad revenue-sharing scheme with its active contributors. Another platform, referred to as “X,” also shares ad revenue with verified creators who meet certain requirements related to impressions and content. This enables users to benefit from their work. However, there is a notable difference between Durov’s platform and Elon Musk’s app. While Telegram offers a 50% split of ad revenue paid in cryptocurrency, Musk’s app reportedly keeps the majority of ad money and pays creators in traditional fiat currency through Stripe.
In conclusion, Telegram’s decision to reward channel owners with a share of ad revenue in Toncoin is part of its strategy to promote community engagement and content sharing. By utilizing the TON blockchain, the platform aims to provide a fast and secure payment system for creators. This move follows a similar approach taken by other social networks, although Telegram’s cryptocurrency-based payment system sets it apart from competitors.
