Siemens collaborates with Sony to explore the depths of the industrial metaverse
Siemens, the renowned German technology conglomerate, has joined forces with Sony to embark on an exciting metaverse venture focused on industrial applications. This collaboration aims to introduce a cutting-edge mixed-reality headset in 2024, specifically catering to professional designers and engineers rather than gamers.
In a recent interview with CNBC, Siemens CEO Roland Busch discussed the company’s vision for the new mixed-reality headset, which is equipped with artificial intelligence to enhance productivity for creators and manufacturers. While the device is complemented by Siemens’ software, including cut and 3D software, it is primarily designed with professional designers in mind rather than gamers.
As part of this collaborative effort, Siemens is harnessing NVIDIA’s resources to create “photorealistic images,” and Amazon Web Services is also playing a significant role in the project. The unveiled headset, showcased at CES in Las Vegas, utilizes Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip and boasts Sony’s micro OLED displays, delivering an impressive 4K resolution per eye. Additionally, the headset comes with external accessories such as ring and stylus/pointer controllers, enabling real-time interaction with digital objects.
While Siemens is making its foray into the headset domain with this latest development, Sony has been actively involved in the metaverse industry for some time. In addition to the PlayStation VR 2, a virtual reality headset for the PlayStation 5, Sony has partnered with Google and Qualcomm to explore mixed reality. The collaboration with Siemens demonstrates Sony’s commitment to embracing fresh perspectives in technology, aligning with the growing interest of major industry players like Apple in the metaverse space.
