Sepolia testnet receives deployment of Dencun update by Ethereum developers

The Sepolia testnet has successfully undergone the deployment of the Dencun update by Ethereum developers. This hard fork introduces various tools aimed at reducing fees on the Ethereum blockchain, while also creating new possibilities for bridges and stabilization funds.

Although this was not the first attempt to deploy the update on the test network, developers did not provide specific launch details but confirmed that Sepolia has now been updated to Dencun.

One notable implementation in Dencun is proposal EIP-4844, also known as “proto-danksharding,” which aims to enhance network scalability by introducing a new transaction type that can store more data. The developers anticipate that this update will lead to a reduction in transaction fees in second-level (L2) networks that are based on roll-up technology.

To further decrease fees and enhance transparency, the upcoming hard fork also includes proposals EIP-1153 and EIP-4788.

However, the previous attempt to launch the Dencun hard fork on the Goerli testnet was unsuccessful. On January 17th, ETH developers initiated the Dencun hard fork on Goerli, but the update could not be completed due to synchronization issues with validators. Approximately one fifth of operators had not updated their software, causing the setback.

The Ethereum team initially announced on December 22, 2023, that they would update Dencun on the Goerli testnet. After being launched on the Goerli test network, the update was subsequently deployed on Sepolia and Holesky within a two-week timeframe. If all stages prove successful, Dencun is expected to be implemented on the mainnet in February 2024.
