Rubiales, former head of the Spain FA, ventures into NFTs amidst allegations of sexual assault.

Luis Rubiales, the former president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), who is currently facing allegations of sexual assault, has launched a collection of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to support the cause of ‘real equality’.

Rubiales, who stepped down from his position after being accused of sexual assault, has unveiled his NFT collection, which features an image of him as a child. The collection has been created in collaboration with a South Korean company called The Moon Labs, who acknowledged that Rubiales had made a mistake in relation to the Women’s World Cup. They minted the NFT collection as a tribute to Rubiales’ contributions to Spanish and global football. The collection is now available on OpenSea, a popular marketplace for digital collectibles.

The Rubiales NFT collection comprises 170 items, with the creator receiving 10% in royalties. The description of the collection highlights Rubiales’ achievements as a professional athlete and incorporates his experiences from childhood, effectively telling his story.

Rubiales resigned from his position in September 2023, following a scandal involving a non-consensual kiss he gave to Spanish player Jenni Hermoso during the Women’s World Cup final. In October 2023, FIFA imposed a three-year ban on Rubiales, prohibiting him from participating in any football-related activities.

As the world of NFTs continues to grow, OpenSea’s CEO has expressed confidence in the various use cases for these digital assets and cautioned against relying solely on trading volumes as a measure of success.
