Meta introduces Horizon Worlds for mobile and web platforms
Meta is shaking up the world of virtual reality (VR) with its latest development, Horizon Worlds. In a recent blog post, Meta announced that it will be bringing its collaborative VR platform to mobile devices and the web in early access. This move aims to expand the reach of Horizon Worlds beyond just virtual reality headsets.
Initially, only a select few individuals will be able to access a multiplayer shooter game called Super Rumble through the Meta Quest app on Android and web browsers. Support for iOS devices will follow in the coming weeks. Meta recognizes the need for multiple entry points into the metaverse, as there is currently a lack of engaging content in this space.
While it is still unclear how users can gain early access to Horizon Worlds, Meta plans to gradually roll out its flagship virtual application to more people as it collects feedback and improves the overall experience.
This announcement comes shortly after Meta introduced a new program for teachers in the United States, aiming to inspire students to explore the possibilities of the metaverse. Meta is partnering with 15 universities across the country, including prestigious institutions like Stanford University and Arizona State University, to promote immersive learning.
However, Meta’s Horizon Worlds still has a long way to go to achieve its goals. In 2022, the platform faced criticism from both external sources and Meta employees for its numerous quality issues and the unenjoyable environment that negatively impacted user experience.
Horizon Worlds allows users to create and interact with other players in a virtual world, drawing inspiration from popular games like Minecraft and Roblox. Meta is investing billions of dollars into the success of Horizon Worlds, as its efforts to create a believable VR experience have already cost the company over $7.5 billion.
Despite the setbacks, Meta remains committed to the metaverse, as evidenced by its continued investment in Horizon Worlds. The company is determined to push the boundaries of virtual reality and create a truly immersive and engaging experience for users.
