Layer 3 solutions face criticism from Vitalik Buterin
Vitalik Buterin, one of the creators behind the Ethereum blockchain, has reaffirmed his stance on layer 3 networks. Joining in on a discussion about the value of layer 3 (L3) solutions, Buterin referenced a post from a year and a half ago.
The debate surrounding the usefulness of L3 protocols for the Ethereum ecosystem has recently sparked online. Various speakers have highlighted the benefits of these solutions. Buterin shared a link to his article titled “What kind of layer 3s make sense?” which he published in September 2022. In this article, he expressed his belief that this network category is not primarily intended for scaling. Instead, he suggested that these protocols would implement specific “customized features” for layer 2.
Layer 3 solutions encompass protocols deployed on top of existing layer 2 (L2) solutions. Similar to L2, the third layer of networks aims to scale and enhance the functionality of the primary blockchain.
Polygon Labs CEO, Marc Boiron, recently stated that third-layer networks are unnecessary for scaling Ethereum and pose a threat to the security of the leading blockchain within the ecosystem. Boiron also mentioned that Polygon Labs is not working on such solutions, as L3 is not required for scaling Ethereum.
The debate surrounding the value of layer 3 networks started a day before Boiron’s comments. A developer using the pseudonym Potuz listed several advantages of these solutions in response to a related question.
