Introducing Movement Labs: Connecting Move and Ethereum through an innovative layer-2 rollup solution
Movement Labs, a team dedicated to enhancing security and efficiency in blockchains, has announced its plans to launch M2, a layer-2 rollup for Ethereum that incorporates the Move Virtual Machine (Move VM). This advanced interoperability project aims to unlock new functionalities for developers building on Ethereum by utilizing Celestia’s modular data availability infrastructure via Blobstream and the modular stack.
One of the key features of M2 is the Fractal module developed by Movement Labs, which allows Solidity projects to be launched without the need for writing Move code. The Fractal module converts Solidity scripting into opcodes that can be understood by next-generation virtual machines like Move, resulting in improved performance and security.
The Move VM was originally developed by Meta (formerly Facebook) as a code language optimized for security and efficiency. By deploying it as a rollup on top of Ethereum’s highly decentralized base layer, Movement Labs believes they can create a foundation that combines the best of both worlds.
The M2 mainnet incorporates Celestia for Data Availability, Snowman for Shared Sequencing, and the Move Virtual Machine for execution, resulting in processing speeds of over 145,000 transactions per second (TPS). Celestia’s custom-built Blobstream technology enables Movement’s rollup to achieve this high throughput, paving the way for consumer apps with global reach.
The modular design of M2 also makes it easier for existing Ethereum projects to adopt. Solidity script transitions allow teams to migrate to M2 and take advantage of Move’s advanced features without extensive rewrites. This approach aims to merge communities and foster collaboration.
Rushi Manche, co-founder of Movement Labs, emphasizes the importance of architectural choice in enabling comprehensive interoperability and long-term tool accessibility across the web3 ecosystem. Manche envisions Move becoming a cornerstone for blockchains, similar to how Linux spearheaded open-source software development through collaborative adjustments.
With its versatile design, scalability at negligible costs, and top-tier security audits, the M2 rollup mainnet embodies Movement Labs’ commitment to accessibility and performance-boosting standardization.
