Insights into the upcoming Ethereum update disclosed by Vitalik Buterin
Speaking about the next phase of the blockchain roadmap, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin discussed the Purge. The new stage of the roadmap is designed to simplify the network structure and reduce the load on nodes. Key to the development of the protocol at this stage is the implementation and development of EIP-6780, which was introduced during the recent Dencun hard fork. This optimizes the SELFDESTRUCT opcode, thereby increasing security and making protocol implementation simpler.
Buterin also highlighted several other changes within Ethereum to optimize the protocol. A Geth client recently removed thousands of lines of code, streamlining network support that had been added before the Merge. Additionally, EIP-7523 addressed the issue of “empty accounts.”
Thanks to the update, support for most empty accounts from Ethereum proof-of-work (PoW) networks has been discontinued. The 18-day blob storage window introduced in Dencun has also contributed to the protocol’s simplification, limiting the stored information to 50 GB, which remains consistent over time.
Buterin also suggested using a precompilation mechanism, involving Ethereum contracts that contain logic implemented directly by the clients instead of EVM code.
In March, the Ethereum co-founder emphasized the need for internal scaling of the network and parallelization of rollup processing to build on the success of the Dencun update. This upgrade, the most significant since the migration to the proof-of-stake (PoS) algorithm due to the Merge, implemented the possibility of blob transactions.
