Ethereum witnesses live deployment of Dencun’s impressive upgrade
The highly anticipated Dencun upgrade has finally arrived for the Goerli testnet, but due to low participation, it failed to be finalized in the expected timeframe.
On January 17th, the Dencun upgrade was launched on Ethereum’s Goerli testnet. This upgrade includes a significant update called “proto-danksharding,” which aims to reduce transaction fees on layer-2. Tim Beiko, the community manager at Ethereum Foundation, confirmed the launch.
Beiko acknowledged that the participation among validators for the upgrade was not as high as expected, but this outcome was anticipated. It seems that the upgrade also resulted in a “chain split,” as not all validators synced with each other for the update.
After being deployed on Goerli, the next phase of the upgrade is scheduled to occur on January 31st on the Sepolia testnet. Following that, the Holesky testnet will activate Dencun on February 7th. Once Dencun runs smoothly on all three testnets, the Ethereum Foundation plans to implement the upgrade on the Ethereum mainnet by the end of the first quarter of 2024.
Dencun marks the final upgrade for the Goerli testnet. Consequently, both the client and Ethereum Foundation testing teams will cease support for the Goerli testnet after the Dencun upgrade is completed.
The Dencun upgrade, also known as EIP-4844, aims to increase the blockchain space for data blobs and reduce layer-2 rollup fees by activating proto-danksharding. This expansion of data storage capacity should enable Ethereum’s blockchain to scale, allowing for more transactions without increasing gas fees.
