Bitcoin Mining in Texas Causing Health Problems for Residents
Texas is quickly becoming a prominent center for Bitcoin mining, but the local population is facing a range of health problems, including hearing impairments, headaches, dizziness, and sleep disturbances.
The clash between the economic interests of Bitcoin mining in Texas and the well-being of its residents is intensifying, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive policy solutions.
Texas is currently home to 10 of the 34 major Bitcoin mines in the United States. Following China’s crackdown on Bitcoin mining in 2021, several mining companies, such as Marathon Digital and Hut 8, relocated to Texas due to its cost-effective power and access to renewable energy.
Bitcoin miners are drawn to Texas because of its relatively low energy costs and deregulated power grid, which provides more flexibility and competitive pricing. Moreover, the state’s favorable regulatory environment and abundant renewable energy sources make it an appealing destination for mining operations.
On July 9, Hut 8 announced its expansion into West Texas, citing “some of the lowest locational wholesale power pricing in North America.”
However, this influx of miners has also had adverse effects on the local residents’ health. According to Time, residents in Texas have reported noise levels from Bitcoin miners reaching as high as 91 decibels. The Hearing Health Foundation states that sounds exceeding 70 decibels can cause hearing damage over time.
These noise levels are comparable to those of a lawnmower or a chainsaw and can potentially result in long-term ear damage. Some residents have even received official diagnoses of hearing loss issues as a direct consequence of the excessive noise.
Additionally, residents have reported other health problems, including sleep deprivation, dizziness, vertigo, and fainting spells. These issues are particularly prevalent among older residents.
