Ava Labs Reveals Plan to Propel Avalanche to 100k TPS

Ava Labs has made waves with a groundbreaking update for the Avalanche (AVAX) blockchain. Known as Vryx, this upgrade boasts the ability to handle an astounding 100,000 transactions per second (TPS). On January 26, the company provided a sneak peek into this development, which aims to enhance the efficiency and speed of the blockchain. This update tackles one of the most pressing and persistent challenges in blockchain technology: scaling networks to accommodate larger transactions without compromising security or decentralization.

Ava Labs plans to implement this technology on the HyperSDK testnet, a toolkit for building high-performance blockchains, by the second quarter of 2024. If successful, it will become a significant component of Avalanche’s operations. The key to this upgrade lies in a sophisticated system called Decoupled State Machine Replication (DSMR). Essentially, DSMR revolutionizes the way transactions are processed. Traditionally, transactions and their verification are closely linked, but with DSMR, they will be separated. In State Machine Replication (SMR), blockchain transactions are typically checked and approved (or executed) in a step-by-step process. However, Vryx’s DSMR will introduce a new approach by allowing transactions to be distributed and sequenced before verification. This can significantly increase transaction speed, enabling more transactions to occur simultaneously.

However, there is a potential downside to consider. This system may allow invalid transactions (those that do not pay a fee) to spread across the network, leading to unnecessary data congestion. To mitigate this issue, Vryx plans to ensure that only fee-paying transactions are circulated, preserving resources and maintaining the system’s efficiency.

In a recent move, Ava Labs implemented layoffs as part of a strategic effort to optimize resource allocation. CEO Emin Gün Sirer emphasized that this decision was made in light of current market conditions and aims to accelerate growth for both the company and the Avalanche ecosystem. Despite the impact on approximately 40 employees, primarily from the marketing division, Gün Sirer reassured stakeholders of Ava Labs’ strong financial position.
