Worldcoin’s Orb scanner passes Trail of Bits’ security assessment without any vulnerabilities detected.
Worldcoin’s decentralized protocol for personal identification has undergone an independent audit conducted by Trail of Bits. The audit, which began on August 14, 2023, involved testing the software and device called Orb, which is designed to scan users’ iris. Over a period of six weeks, experts meticulously studied the code for any potential vulnerabilities.
During the audit, the auditors simulated various attacks in which hackers could potentially access users’ data. However, the auditors concluded that the device code does not contain any vulnerabilities. They also highlighted that it is not possible for potential attackers to extract iris data from Orb’s network traffic unless they gain control of one of the trusted certificates.
The publication of the audit report had some impact on Worldcoin’s native token, WLD. The token experienced a brief 4% increase in value, rising from $9.50 to $9.90. However, this growth was short-lived, and the token’s price eventually rolled back to $9.60 at the time of writing, according to data from CoinMarketCap. It is worth noting that the token is currently trading at 20% below its historical high of $11.82, which was recorded on March 10.
Concerns about the security of Worldcoin have been raised for several months. In March, the Spanish data protection agency (AEPD) demanded that Worldcoin cease collecting personal information and instead utilize the data that had already been collected. Furthermore, since its launch in July 2023, the project has faced investigations in countries such as Germany, France, the U.K., and Kenya.
In January, the regulatory authority in Hong Kong conducted a search of Worldcoin’s offices, and in early March, South Korea commenced an investigation into a startup involved in the collection of biometric data.
Despite these regulatory challenges and security concerns, Worldcoin continues to surge in value. It is clear that the project faces significant obstacles, but its growth and potential cannot be overlooked.
