Robbie Williams set to make metaverse debut alongside LightCycle

Robbie Williams, the beloved British pop singer, is set to make an appearance in the virtual city known as LightCycle. Joining the metaverse trend, Williams will be featured on this platform, which is built using Unreal Engine 5. The launch of LightCycle is scheduled for the fourth quarter of this year.

Williams expressed his belief that the metaverse offers a significant new market for music discovery, which is why he decided to dive into the world of virtual reality. However, it is important to note that Williams partnered with AI infrastructure provider Vertexlabs.uk, rather than directly with LightCycle. The financial details of the collaboration have not been disclosed, and further information about the event is yet to be revealed.

While the metaverse has gained popularity, it still lacks certain features that would allow it to compete with video games in terms of immersion. Although various virtual reality-focused startups have collaborated with celebrities like Snoop Dogg, Andrew Yang, and Lady Gaga, the industry has not yet made significant strides forward, as major companies remain skeptical about the technology’s readiness for mainstream adoption.

For instance, The Walt Disney Co. made headlines when it laid off all employees in its consumer experiences unit, the division responsible for its metaverse strategies, as part of a company-wide restructuring in March 2023. It is unclear whether Disney has entirely abandoned its plans for virtual reality.

In the midst of these developments, NYU Stern’s Center for Business and Human Rights (CBHR) has emphasized the urgent need for a comprehensive privacy law. The CBHR warns of significant privacy threats in the rapidly growing metaverse. While the next iteration of the internet offers numerous benefits, it also brings unprecedented risks such as the potential erosion of privacy and the proliferation of abuse in virtual environments. Mariana Olaizola Rosenblat, a policy advisor on technology and law at NYU Stern CBHR, stresses the importance of addressing these concerns.
