Prediction markets have emerged as a prominent application of blockchain technology, with over $3.1 billion in betting volume in Q3 of this year. Polymarket, considered crypto’s first ‘killer app’, has gained widespread attention and dominated the prediction market sector, accounting for 99% of the market share. The platform’s influence extends beyond the crypto community, as it has reached mainstream media and demonstrated how blockchain can revolutionize our interaction with knowledge. A prime example of this is Polymarket’s involvement in the 2024 US elections, which showcased blockchain’s potential to reshape traditional media.
However, prediction markets are just one aspect of a larger shift in information generation and verification. This transformation builds upon the success of crowdsourcing platforms like Wikipedia and Reddit, taking them to the next level. These platforms revolutionized the harnessing of collective wisdom during the early 2000s. Wikipedia’s open-editing model created a trusted global knowledge hub, while Reddit fostered public discourse through upvotes and downvotes. These platforms democratized access to information and opinions, surpassing the limitations of centralized media.
Despite their achievements, these crowdsourcing platforms were not without flaws. Wikipedia, for instance, struggled to maintain neutrality due to content wars and biased edits. Reddit unintentionally promoted clickbait and sensationalism, prioritizing popularity over accuracy. These vulnerabilities, present in various crowdsourcing platforms, make them susceptible to manipulation, misinformation, and groupthink, even with their widespread usage.
Blockchain technology addresses these long-standing issues by introducing transparency, accountability, and incentives for truth. Its protocols record every edit, vote, or contribution immutably, eliminating the possibility of manipulation. The transparency offered by blockchain-enabled proof-of-unique human protocols revolutionizes accountability and trust dynamics, which traditional open-editing systems have always faced challenges with. With these protocols, the integrity of information remains intact, as users can rely on its authenticity.
Prediction markets, exemplified by Polymarket, prioritize truth over popularity, unlike Reddit’s voting system. While Reddit’s upvote system can elevate popular content, it does not guarantee accuracy. Prediction markets compel participants to bet on what they believe to be true, rewarding accuracy and penalizing inaccuracies. This market-driven approach establishes a self-regulating system that values verifiable truth.
Blockchain also presents a solution to the financial struggles of journalism. Traditional crowdsourcing platforms have struggled to create sustainable funding models without compromising quality. Blockchain introduces decentralized funding models like quadratic funding, allowing the community to decide which content receives funding, rather than relying on advertisers or corporate interests. This self-sustaining system enables high-quality journalism to thrive independently, free from paywalls or ad-driven content. Blockchain ensures that information remains accessible and free, recognizing it as a public good.
Beyond information, blockchain decentralizes opinion by empowering prediction markets to determine the weight of journalism and research. Instead of leaving public discourse to corporate media and influential voices, prediction markets enable the crowd to stake their reputation and money on accurate information. Over time, the crowd validates truth, making it difficult for bad actors to manipulate public opinion.
Crucially, blockchain brings accountability to crowdsourcing platforms by eliminating anonymity. Traditional platforms allow users to contribute anonymously, creating opportunities for trolls, bots, and bad actors to exploit the system. Blockchain’s auditable decision-making ensures a clear chain of responsibility, holding users accountable for their actions. Contributors are no longer able to hide behind anonymity, as blockchain ensures that they stand by the integrity of the information they support.
The future of crowdsourcing platforms is already outdated, as they are unable to address trust, bias, and financial sustainability challenges. Blockchain represents the necessary evolution in this regard. In the future, crowdsourcing platforms will transform into active marketplaces where users determine quality, truth, and value, rather than centralized gatekeepers. Prediction markets, decentralized funding models, and blockchain are the building blocks of this decentralized and transparent internet, where unbiased journalism and research flourish.
The question is no longer if blockchain will bring about the next evolution, but when it will happen.
